George Lucas’ goal in creating Lucasfilm was to operate a film studio free from Hollywood control. It allowed for groundbreaking storytelling and innovative, experimental filmmaking that while sometimes flawed broke the typical LA mindset. Even though he merchandised the shit out of his Star Wars baby, up until now it’s been his. No shareholders looking for a bottom line; just fans. Now its owned by Disney. The shining example of independent cinema just sold out. While it may end up being good for Star Wars fans, film lovers have lost the biggest independent film studio of all time. Some people say people like Lucas destroyed indie film with their blockbusters; I say he reinvented it. We’ll see what he does with that money he’s earned.
The new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 game can’t arrive fast enough for me. Especially after this trailer:
I’ll be getting it for PS3.
One of the coolest moments of the entire Star Wars saga is captured in my drawing for today – Darth Vader’s surprise appearance on Cloud City. I think we were all shocked when Lando opened the dining room door!
Today’s ‘Empire at 30′ daily drawing features the ghost ‘Force Spirit’ of Obi-Wan Kenobi as he tries to warn Luke away from ending his training to go rescue Han, Leia and the kids Chewbacca and C3PO.
The original title for this one was ‘The power of Obi-Wan compels you!’ but I ditched the idea.
Luke finds himself in some trouble of his own in this scene I selected to draw from The Empire Strikes Back for today’s ‘Empire at 30’ daily drawing.
So after the bounty hunters are sent out to find Captain Solo and company, Han finds a way to hide from the Imperial fleet: By fling the Millennium Falcon inside of a giant space slug! But they didn’t know that at first. (^_^)
