Google OS: Weak Little Operating System or Microsoft Threat?

google_chrome_logoEverybody has already covered this, but I’m all for news that is bound to make Microsoft crazy – Google has announced a new operating system named ‘Chrome‘ which will be launching late next year. Here’s the announcement over at Google Blog:

Introducing the Google Chrome OS

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010.

Already, people are dismissing the announcement with cranky posts. I certainly hope it’s a Microsoft threat, and I think it’s a mistake to brush off the news. Oh, how quickly people forget about Microsoft’s repeated mistakes.

The only thing I really don’t like about it is how it might cut into Apple’s continually increasing market share. But that’s only because I’m an Apple freak.
